Why choose Thurston?

We are a small, family-owned and operated company dedicated to crafting beautiful, high-quality American-made furniture since 1960. We take pride in sourcing most of our raw materials within a 500-mile radius of our factory, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Our heirloom-quality, solid wood furniture is crafted by skilled woodworkers in Vermont, using sustainably harvested native woods from well-managed forests across North America. Even our formaldehyde-free finishes are produced in Southern Vermont. We prioritize sustainability by recycling all packaging and waste and support local farmers by donating the sawdust we generate.Thurston’s heirloom furniture is built using time-tested joinery and construction methods, ensuring that each piece is made to last a lifetime.

Are Veneers or Plywood used in the construction of your furniture?

Veneers are a perfect choice for certain pieces. Specifically in instances in which solid wood may expand or contract. If veneers or plywood are used in a piece, that information is listed directly on the product page. We primarily avoid using veneers or plywood in our handcrafted Vermont furniture.

What type of finish do you use?

We use Formaldehyde-Free Nitrocellulose Lacquer. This eco-friendly finish complies with VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) standards so that you can enjoy a beautiful, low-sheen appearance without concerns. It's ideal for all our products, offering excellent durability and protection while ensuring safety for you and the environment. Plus, it contains no phthalates or PFAS.

What is the sturdy act?

The STURDY Act, or Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act, catalyzes furniture safety in the United States. It aims to prevent tip-over accidents, especially those involving young children, by setting stricter stability standards for certain types of furniture.

The Sturdy Act will take effect on September 1, 2023. After this date, all clothing storage units of a specific size must pass stability tests to continue being sold.

After careful consideration of our compliance options, we have implemented an interlocking drawer system in our bedroom furniture. This system allows you to open only one drawer at a time in each vertical stack of drawers.

What is your warranty?

The craftsmanship and materials in our wood furniture are guaranteed for the lifetime of the original owner of the piece. We want you to enjoy your furniture for years to come! Please see our lifetime guarantee page for more details.

How do I care for my beautiful furniture?

Keep it simple! Grab a clean, soft cloth that’s slightly damp and gently wipe it. Remember to dry it thoroughly afterward.

When moving furniture, always lift it instead of sliding it across the floor to prevent accidental damage. Use at least two people when lifting, with one on each end. Be sure to lift from the bottom of the furniture pieces and avoid sliding tables, beds, or dressers along the floor. Sliding furniture can damage both your flooring and the furniture legs.

Beds must always be disassembled before moving to prevent damage. Never attempt to move a bed while it is still assembled.
